Under authority.

"Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of."

God has placed a system of authority in our world that requires faith to operate under its boundaries: fathers over sons and daughters, employers over employees, government leaders over the people, church leaders over church members. These are authority structures God has placed in our lives to protect and guide us to His will.

As Christians we need to pray God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Praying God's will be done requires that at times our will does not get done. We sacrifice what we want for what God wants and others need.

Matthew 8:9 "And I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it ." For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it."

ACTION STEP: Today we have the opportunity to die to what we want, and give God what He wants. Not our will be done, but His. Look at death to self as an exercise in strength for your today, and all your tomorrows. If we can tell ourself, "No" then we have the power to overcome anything and everything that may come your way through the power of Jesus Christ.

You are more than an overcomer.

Matthew 16:24

What does the Bible say about Follow Me as I Follow Christ?

1 Corinthians 11:1-2 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you.
Matthew 16:24 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
John 3:16-17 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
1 Corinthians 4:16 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me .
John 14:6 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me .

ACTION STEP: Not everyone is going to get up and put one foot in front of another whether it's to run a race, go back to school, do something for someone else, read their Bible--but you, you are different. You've got what it takes. God put something in you and that something will cause others to follow you. So, know where you're going. Know the direction in which you are headed. The Lord orders the steps of the righteous, this is true; but how many follow His orders completely? For partial obedience is disobedience. Not everyone that runs this race in life will receive the prize. Beware who you run with. Bad company can corrupt.

Parasite

"But I am a worm and not a man,A reproach of men and despised by the people."
Definition
A parasite is an organism that lives on or in a host organism and gets its food from or at the expense of its host. ... Protozoa are microscopic, one-celled organisms that can be free-living or parasitic in nature.

While in Ghana we visited the Botanical Gardens a short drive from the Bible College on our one free day. My husband and I were blessed that our team on the ground wanted to do something nice for us. The team members we took with us had experienced a vigorous schedule so it worked well for the entire team. What I saw however, was not what I expected. The above photo is the inside of a tree. It has been totally eaten from the inside out and is dead but still standing. This is the result of a parasite.

In life there are parasites. Some parasites are people, some are feelings of bitterness and unforgiveness toward people; but either way they eat away at our soul, emotions and who we are on the inside.

ACTION STEP: Cut off the parasite in your life. Check your relationships to see if they are healthy or devouring. Be a life-giving friend, parent, co-worker and Christian.

Becoming your authentic self.

Genesis 1:26
“then God said, 'Let Us make (asah) humans in Our image, according to Our likeness'

Sadly there are no short cuts when you’ve experienced neglect. The road to reconnection with your self can be painstaking. The start is to acknowledge, things aren’t ok as they are right now. This can be the catalyst for change.

Then you can begin a process of reclaiming your life story for you. You may need to relearn a language for your feelings and experiences on your own terms, rather than others’. You might also need to rediscover how to like and love yourself for who you really are, taking care of your feelings and needs with equal value alongside those you care for. A trusted therapist can really help with this process.

Reading Running on Empty is also a great start. It may help you make sense of what has been a background feeling, a hint of something not being right or it might shout out at you, ‘this is me.’

Whatever your next step, perhaps the kindest thing you can do, is to acknowledge that your experience of neglect was real for you. And that’s when the healing can begin.

ACTION STEP: Brain circuitry runs on well-worn pathways, and while brains at all ages are capable of change, the thinking and feeling neuropathways created at a young age tend to become our default throughout life. Once our brains are trained to think either “I mess up sometimes, but I’m a valuable person” or “I am bad because something is wrong with me,” changing our thinking can be really difficult. Start today anyway. Spend at least twelve minutes in the word of God and fifteen minutes a day saying out-loud what God says about you. Make a list of affirmations. Affirmations make us firm. Remind yourself you are created in God's image.
The key to healing from Childhood Emotional Neglect and chronic shame is through working towards breaking the cycle of having shame about feeling shame. Primarily, this is done through emotional validation instead of emotional neglect.
Typically, when we grow up with caregivers neglecting our emotional needs, we learn to neglect our own emotional needs. Change comes when we begin to name our emotional needs, get them care (like through therapy), and start practicing our own ability to honor our emotions and advocate to get our emotional needs met.
Healing from shame can be a long process. It involves learning to be vulnerable to show our emotional needs (to ourselves, our therapist, and eventually with our relationships) and risking vulnerability in hopes of getting the good care that was missing in childhood. A person healing from chronic shame needs to experience more than a cognitive connection with others.
Recovering from chronic shame requires many experiences, over an extended period, of expressing needs and receiving, in response, a sense of being held, being cared for, being loved, and being seen.

We can't change what was, but we can change what is.

Why I feel the way I do. Can you relate?

Psalm 139:13-14
“for it was You who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I will praise You because I have been fearfully and wonderfully made."

God says you are fearfully made, what He means is when God made you, He made you full of respect, reverence, honor, and awe. It is because God is worthy of respect, that we are respectfully made. It is because God is worthy of reverence, that we are made in reverence.

Often times I have struggled with my worth. I have felt as if I was worthless. Nothing I did mattered. Nothing I said was worthy of validation. I just was. I was a burden. I was stupid. It has taken a long time, but I have come to the realization that I have worth, and therefore I am worthy to be respected and honored.

ACTION STEP: Make a list of affirmations. Go ahead. Affirm yourself. Now, I know that was hard. If you still need help find out who you are in the word of God. There is a book called "In Him" and it list who you are in Christ. You are valuable. You are worth the death of God's only son, Jesus. That's what God thinks.

Childhood Emotional Neglect~CEN

James 4:17
"Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin."

Some of the most remarkable characteristics of people with CEN deserve mention. CEN people, both men, and women are exceptionally likable folk. This is part of the tragedy of CEN. These are some of the most lovable people in the world, and yet they feel the most alone. They are typically excessively competent, stand-up folks; yet they feel invisible. They suffer because some vital ingredient is missing from their lives. Yet that missing ingredient is their own emotions, which are not missing; just suppressed. God says, that we have all we need inside of us. As believers we know that, but living it is harder than it seems. The nagging feelings of inadequacy are always ready to rear their ugly head. Like David I am cutting the head off and I will have the victory for it was already won by Christ Jesus.

I tend not to focus on myself when I am in working mode, which is pretty much all the time. I feel lazy when I'm not doing anything. On the mission field it's feast or famine. Hence, the old triggers came up for me to once again. Seeing little girls working so hard, watching their siblings, little ones begging on the streets while the mother ignored them, all brought to mind the demons that I battle. I had great success, in that I did not disconnect or disassociate. I focused on them. I prayed for them, and prayed to God to meet their needs. I did not feel guilty, or blame myself. I did my own self-talk, and meditated on truth. I did not judge anyone, but allowed myself to operate in love.

Our foundation may not be strong, but we can add a new ending to our life. We can become aware of what is lacking, and God can help us fill in the cracks and gaps. I am becoming stronger, and more successful with each passing day, and you can too.

ACTION STEP: “You are not invisible, and you are not to blame. You have no reason to be ashamed. Ask yourself what you feel and why, and you will find your true self there. Your emotions will become your compass, your comfort, and your connection to life. And then you will realize how very much you matter.”

Day 10 Accra, Ghana

Acts 4:33-34
"And with great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of what was sold."

Resources flow to Mission. When God wants mission work to be done, the resources to get it done will manifest. The great commission is to go to ALL nations.

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matt 28:16-20

God sent His Son Jesus - who lived a perfect life. He performed miracles. Though we killed him, God raised Him. God made Him Lord and Christ – our King and Messiah - for those that listen to Him. All we need to do is Repent - be baptized and our sins will be forgiven. God promised an outpouring of His Spirit on everyone. Disaster will turn hearts to God - everyone who turns to Jesus will be saved. What about you? Have you repented, turned life over to Jesus, been baptized?

ACTION STEP: If you aren't supporting missions already, search your heart and see what you can do to support missions.
