John 14:18 (NIV) "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you." Jesus spent 3 years with His disciples mentoring them, training them, preparing them, for when He would no longer be with them. However, He did not abandon them of leave them without a teacher or leave them as orphans. Jesus sent them the Holy Spirit that would not only be with them but be in them. "I will not leave you orphaned," said Jesus, "I will come to you." This promise remains for you and for me. When it seems that the rubbish and the rain have destroyed the spark of faith within you, may the wind of the Spirit blow the dying embers to life again and again.

The Birthday of the Church is Pentecost. It is celebrated 7 weeks after the Resurrection when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the 120 in the Upper Room. Pentecost presents us with an opportunity to consider how we are living each day. Are we relying on the power of the Holy Spirit? Are we an open for the gift of the Spirit? Are we attentive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit? Is the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, etc.) growing in our lives?
Most Christians I know, including me, live in the presence and power of the Spirit, but only to an extent. We are limited by our own fear, our sin, our low expectations, not to mention our tendency to be distracted from God’s work in us by the world around us. Pentecost offers a chance to confess our failure to live by the Spirit and to ask the Lord to fill us afresh with his power. This sunday is Pentecost Sunday. I invite you to journey with me this week. Just like many were called but only 120 obeyed the choice is ours. Power requires presence both yours and His. |
