“The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.”

We need Spirit to Control Self. To exercise self-control is to discipline ourselves, set boundaries, and rule over our actions. We protect our souls when we are self-controlled, because the devil gets an entrance through our minds before we act on a thought. We are three part beings. We are a spirit, we possess a soul and we live in a body. When the Spirit of God controls our spirit, then our spirit tells our soul and body what to do. When we are not spirit led, but flesh driven, then our soul is in control. Flesh is weak. Flesh wants to satisfy and gratify itself NOW! It does not care about Eternity. Spirit led people are Eternity minded people. They love God more than any momentary pleasures that can satisfy and bring self-gratification in the here and now. In order for me to produce the Fruit of the Spirit, I must be rooted in the Spirit. Whatever, is in the root is in the fruit. If I am rooted only in Self. Then, I produce the fruit of Self. I will be selfish, self-reliant, self-righteous, self-confident, self-gratifying, etc. However, if I am rooted in Christ, then I will produce Christ-likeness, which will be the Fruit of the Spirit. It takes the Spirit of God to produce the Fruit of God through the power of the Holy Spirit at work in us to do His will. This is why Jesus could say, "Not my will, but Thy will be done." This is the Lord's will for us and this is why when He was asked by the disciples, "Teach us to pray...", He taught them what we call today, The Lords Prayer. 1 Peter 4:7 “The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.” John Piper writes that we are saying, “Lord Jesus, I want you more than this immediate need!” Through self-control, we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ; we set our minds on things above; we flee from sin; and we do battle against it through prayer. Pursue a greater, eternal good through self-control because Jesus is coming back! ACTION STEP: Pray to the Holy Spirit daily for grace. Grace is God's ability to do through you, what you can not do through yourself. We need grace to produce self-control. Christ in us, producing through us, is the only way to live a life of Self-Control. Self-control is actually our spirit under the control of His spirit, and this comes through loving God more than we love our self. I challenge you to put God on the Throne above all else. When He is number one, all the other people, things, desires, emotions, etc. line up and get in order. Praying for you today.

"The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you're not going to stay where you are." John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan If you fell into a river, the natural thing to do would be to try to swim to shore, not just stay where you are and drown. But, many times people are so shocked by where they find themselves, they do nothing. Doing nothing can cost us dearly. There seems to be a guarantee in life that change will happen. Change is something we tend to fear and become anxious about, because we do not feel in control of life. The good news is that God has a plan for your life to hope, future, and to prosper. If we trust in God and allow the change to grow us, to become more like Jesus Christ in how we respond and act, then we are promised that all things will work together for good for those who love Him and keep His commandments! There is a part for us to do and then He will do His part. Many just wait on Him to do it all and drown. 2 Peter 3:9 (NIV) "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." The longer we live and the more we do the greater our chance of failure. This does not mean we are a failure. It means we experienced failure either by our own fault or someone or something else. We are not in control of everything and everyone. We are only in control of ourselves, and then only if we are forgiven and a child of God is it possible to control oneself possible. I don't trust myself. I trust myself to God to do right. When we fall down, we get back up. When we fail we try again. We are made for success. The Bible says, let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praising the Lord is hard if not impossible when we lack hope. Our hope must be in Jesus Christ for He is the only one that will not leave us, or fail us. Sometimes, like Abraham we have to leave Lot to see our circumstances change. Abraham didn't love Lot any less--he just loved God more! God has got to have all of us not just a little here and there. He wants us to totally surrender to His will. You my need to distance yourself from someone in order to see change for the better in your life. ACTION STEP: What is keeping you down? Is it who you are with or where you are? Both can change. You must make the decision. Decisions are hard but God is good. God will give you what you lack if you only come to Him and ask, believing you shall receive. Remember failure is not falling down but staying down.
"It is never too late to be what you might have been." -- George Eliot "A fresh start - a new day - a new month - a new year. Do you see each day as a fresh start or are you carrying yesterday into this brand new day. See the possibilities of beginning anew." -- Theodore W. Higginsworth New beginnings are often hard to start, but ending something can be even harder. See yesterdays post. Changing ourself is a lot harder than telling others what they should change, and how they should start over. We often have the fear of the unknown and the "What if?" Life is full of unknowns. I try my best to get to know Jesus, and the more I get to know about Him, the more I realize how little I know. I've been married to my hubs for over forty years and I swear, he changes everyday. Sure, I know what he likes to eat, but then he goes and orders something off the menu that completely throws me. It is the same with ourself. We don't really know ourself. We don't know what we are capable of until we are stretched, challenged, sick, tired, in love, or full of hate. Depending on what's in us, and what we are in to, determines how we behave or react. So, since it is difficult at least, and impossible at best to know ourself, how can we know anyone else. We can't. So, instead of saying, "I can't", try saying, "I will try." Like that tea bag we don't know what's in us, until we are in hot water. ACTION STEP: Embrace the hard times. Embrace those moments that make us hot under the collar. Go ahead and just say, "I'm sorry" or "Let's try again"...or even, "I need help." It's never too late to start again. It's never too late to be the best version of you. The best version of you will bring out the best version of others.
