This year we decided the Monday before Thanksgiving was the famiglia cookie bake off. (The Perozich version of the Iron Chef) Joe was the supply sergeant and I made sure we had all the utensils, baking dishes, ingredients and recipes on hand. The day began with me making the batter and Michele making the Pizelles and Jodi making Taralucci Bisquits. I prepared for the Biscotti. Did I mention we had our two year old grandson among us to keep things interesting? Well as my daughter put it as the day wore on, “Mom I don’t think it’s healthy for our family to do things together.” We all broke into laughter but agreed it was a challenge. One wanted to joke and laugh, one wanted to listen to audible books with her head phones in, one wanted to play Christmas music and talk to everyone at the same time and the other one wanted a nap. It’s hard to get everyone on the same page and be family with all the different personalities and preferences. I began to think of how it must have been even 50 years ago to bake cookies. Nuts had to be harvested in the fall, shelled and kept for the occasion. Resources were slim and valuable. It was a cherished and valuable gift of love to bake and give cookies. Today it isn’t the monetary value of the gift it was the value of family and the treasured tradition of doing it together.
Will my children carry on the tradition? It doesn’t matter. What matters is we are family and invest time in one another regardless of our different temperaments and personalities.

If you cannot get along with those who mean the most to you, you will not be of great use to the Kingdom of God. We are called to love the unlovable and sometime that begins at home.
Matthew 5:46 (NLT) “46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much.”
