Proverbs 3:19-21 (NKJV) “Hear, my son, and be wise; and guide your heart in the way. Do not mix with winebibbers, or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.”
However, In scripture (Ecclesiastes see below) there are several references to man eating and drinking, and enjoying the fruit of his labor. It is a gift from God, and it is his heritage. So if we are being productive and are honoring and obeying God, then He blesses the fruit of our labor, and blesses our food.
Exodus 23:25,26 (NKJV)”Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span.”
It seems that more and more young women in America are experiencing fertility problems. Doctors will tell you if you want to conceive and are overweight the best thing you can do is to drop a few pounds.
Ecclesiastes 9:7 (NKJV)”Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; For God has already accepted your works.”
This tells me that if you want to eat you've got to work—do something to create a healthy appetite so that the food one consumes replaces what was burn off during work. However, many in America don’t work either. And as if that were not enough we have another problem.
The problem is when food replaces fellowship. The problem is when food becomes our comfort and we choose to eat over going to God with what is bothering us and allowing Him to comfort us. The problem is when we eat because we are bored and choose to find comfort in food rather than helping to bring comfort and relief to those in need.
Romans 8:1-2 (NKJV) "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death."
So where do we strike the balance? What is the answer to our dilemma? It is found in the word of God. Simply put “obey”. One tiny word which has one large problem—us. We want what we want more than we want what God wants and it’s killing us one bite at a time. We can read in (James 1:23-25) that we can’t just read the word and then forget what it says; we must remember what we read and do it after we walk away from the mirror. Let’s get back to the Bible and that mirror doesn't lie.
So get into the Word and then go do something to work up an appetite. Enjoy life and eating... but not at the expense of life.
