Recently, while studying the subject of "Freedom" for our Sunday morning series, I happened upon the story of the Silkworm. The story was for me, more about the farmer than the silkworm. Just like Christians, the silkworm goes through many stages of growth. The silkworm farmer watches the worm. At just right time the silkworm farmer destroys the worm. Then the farmer takes what the worm has toiled for, before he becomes what he was meant to be, before he stretches forth his wings to freedom.
The first stage is the worm, crawling on it's belly, its only care is filling his belly. I often feel before we are saved, that's the whole of it. We don't know we were created for greatness. We live unaware that we were created to fly. We have no idea that there is a process in our becoming free. We get caught up in the pleasures of the flesh. What we see is what we want. We go about consuming until we are consumed.
Sometimes in the life of a Christian it seems that things get worst before they get better. It appears that all we do is work. We toil and spin and then, we come to the end of life as we know it. Satan wants nothing more than to discourage us and cause us to loose hope. He watches as we spin and make his plans to kill, steal and destroy.
But, one day we break free. We realize that God is a good God. He created us for greatness. We were created in His image and likeness. God does have a future for us, and it is a future for good. When the process is finished--at just the right time, we take flight. We become what we were in the process of becoming all along.
Satan knows the process. He has been around a long time. He watches mankind with a hate and a desire to destroy him. We as Christians took his place when he was kicked out of heaven with a third of the angels. He had instruments, percussion, strings and pipes within him and was in the presence of God until merchandising was found within him. (Ez. 28:15) That word merchandising means that he kept back some of the praise for himself. If a salesman sold you a suit for $300.00 and put $200.00 in the cash drawer and $100.00 in his pocket; that is much like what satan did. He took the praise that belonged to God.
The silkworm farmer is much like satan. He only cares about what he can get out of the silkworm, not about the silkworm or what the silkworm is to become. He wants to merchandise the worm. So, when the worm has spun out it's days, the farmer steams the cocoon open killing the worm and harvesting the silk.
He puts the worm in such hot situations that the worm cannot survive. Then, all that the worm has spun goes to the hands of satan. Satan always kills his captives.
Actions Step: The next time you find yourself in a steamy situation, call upon the name of the Lord. When the heat gets turned up in your life, call upon your creator and maker. When you feel trapped in the web of your own making, call upon your Savior. The Lord tells us in His word, "that He made the blacksmith the one that blows against the coals." (Is. 54:16) In other words, God knows what to do with satan! We were created to be free. Let's use our freedom to be all God has called us to be, and to set others free. Today, use your freedom to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those that see themselves as worms, to those that are hopelessly spinning and watch as Jesus gives them wings!
