Funerals never get old or dull for me. Every time I do one as a minister it is like the first one I have ever done. Why? Because it is the first one for this person. All the family and stories are different. Some are sad and unexpected others are anticipated and welcomed. I pray all of ours will be the later. They are like a sweet goodbye that warms the heart because the heart knows there will be a hello again.
This week a friend of mine told me about the last few minutes he had with his father. His father pulled him close and said, "You're my best friend." That statement has stayed with me all week. I keep thinking about it. I realized that is every parent’s dream, to raise a child that can truly become your best friend.
That's what Jesus's parents did. Even though Jesus was not Joseph’s true son. Even though Jesus was Mary's son of other sons, he--Jesus became their best friend.
The Bible tells us that Jesus wants to be all of our friends.
Matthew 11:19 (NIV) "The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is proved right by her deeds."
John 15:15 (NIV) "I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you."
Don't wait to tell those whom you love that they are your friend, and that you love them. It is a wonderful legacy to leave a person--knowing they are loved by you. Too often death is a thief and it stills the words we want to say from us...leaving them unsaid.
1 Thessalonians 5:2 (NLT) "For you know quite well that the day of the Lord's return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night."
