What is the 4th of July really all about???

Tomorrow is the day we will participate in a holiday that is now 243 years old. This year perhaps more than ever we need to celebrate our freedom. Perhaps because I have traveled abroad a lot lately, I am grateful for this United States of America. I have been in several countries. I know how great this country is, and how blessed we are as a nation. I would love for everyone to go to other countries and I believe everyone would agree--God blessed America.

We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of
July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.

On July 4th, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Jefferson. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2nd, from then on the 4th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence.

We are the people that are to insure our country stays free. Galatians 5:1 says, "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." It is up to us to stay free both spiritually, financially as well as culturally and socially. 1 Peter 2:16 tells us, "Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God." When we no longer live as servants of God and submit ourselves to be slaves to others we loose our freedom. The only way for us to live free is to understand the Bible and the true definition of freedom.
ACTION STEP: Thank God for our freedom. Celebrate our freedom. But, more importantly let's do what the Bible tells us to do. John 8:31-32 reminds us, "So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,  and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” I exhort you to read your Bible so that you know the truth, because it is the truth you know that sets you free and ultimately will keep you free.

Keeping people out of living a trashy life

Have you seen the new Toy Story 4? It has so many hidden meanings that only an adult can appreciate. Truly, if you are pastoral or have a mercy motive, you will totally understand what I am referring to. I certainly don't want to ruin the movie for anyone, but I will say the love story, the giving your life to help others have a life, and trying to salvage people, are all strong themes in this new movie.

Sometimes we can be more comfortable living a life that is beneath the purposes for which we were created. How many times do we find ourselves comfortable in places we know we shouldn't be? When life gets hard or situations make us uncomfortable where do we run? Forky ran to the Trash Can because that's where he came from. I get it. We all came from trash (sin). But, just like Woody kept chasing Forky to keep him out of the trash, the Holy Spirit speaks to us, chases us through our conscience and refuses to let go of us.

There is a part in the movie that is so good. In this simple children's story Woody is having a conversation with Buzz Light Year. Buzz doesn't understand the inner voice of the Holy Spirit. Woody explains to Buzz, it's like his own voice inside of him. Later in the movie, Buzz finds that inner voice. Have you ever heard God speak to you? When that happened, did you listen and obey? The reason I ask, is that when we ignore the voice of the Holy Spirit long enough we go spiritually deaf. If that has happened to you, repent. Ask God to speak to you again. This time obey immediately, and you will find you can experience an ongoing conversation with God.

In one part of the movie Woody is trying to explain to Forky that he's not trash. He tells Forky, "A name is written on the bottom of your shoe, that means you are loved and you belong to someone. You are special." Our name is written in the Lamb's book of Life. We matter. We matter to God. We may be different than others, but we are God's, should we choose to accept Jesus as our Savior. Forky had to realize he mattered. When he realized he mattered to someone, his choices changed! He wasn't comfortable among trash any longer. His desires changed.  He desired to spend his life with those that loved him.

God cleans us up. He lifts us out of our trash, because He loves us.

ACTION STEP: Do you realize that you are not trash. You belong to God. God gave His son instead of leaving us to live a life of trash. Jesus got us out by coming to save us. Listen for the voice of your creator today. Hear what He has planned for you. Go get others out of the trash can of life and do your best to keep them from returning by sharing your testimony.
Revelation 12:11 (KJV)
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Putting others to shame?

Hope you had a great weekend. If you haven't gone Blueberry picking I suggest you give it a try. So fun and easy to do. This is the time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather and fruits that are in season. I praise God for all He has given us. So, let's continue to talk about worship. Do we pour our worship out on Jesus like a sweet perfume?

Since all four gospels share various accounts of a woman releasing a jar of perfume over Jesus, it must be pretty important. These accounts give us insights from different people’s perspectives including a Pharisee named Simon and Jesus’s own disciples.

Let’s set the stage for Luke’s account: Simon, a powerful religious leader, invited Jesus (the new teacher in town) to come and eat with him at his house. It would be quite an honor to receive an invitation such as this. Invitation accepted.

Jesus reclined at the table and dined with religious folks, mixing and mingling with them. Suddenly, they were interrupted by a woman – an uninvited guest who approached Jesus. She was weeping, and she broke a jar of perfume over Him.
Simon was appalled at what the woman was doing, and he thought to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!” (Luke 7:39 NLT)

Verse 40 of Luke chapter 7 says, “Then Jesus answered his thoughts. ‘Simon,’ he said to the Pharisee, ‘I have something to say to you.’” Simon responded, “Go ahead, Teacher.” (Side-note here, Jesus answers our thoughts.)

Jesus responded to Simon’s judgmental attitude with a parable: There was a man who lent 50 pieces of silver to one man and 500 pieces of silver to another. Neither man could pay him back, so he forgave their debts. Which of the men loved him more?

Simon answered correctly: “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.” (Luke 7:43 NLT)

Then Jesus scolded Simon for being such a poor host. Simon didn’t give Jesus water to wash his hands/feet, he didn’t greet Him with a kiss on the cheek, and he didn’t offer Him oil for His head.

These were all customs that were very important in the Jewish culture, but Simon failed at them all. The “sinful woman” put Simon to shame. She bathed Jesus, kissed him and anointed Him with a costly gift.

When we love someone it is easy to pour out all we are and have on that person. But, when feelings wain it is sometimes hard to find the strength to keep pouring. We find ourselves empty and lacking the strength to pour out anything to anyone.

ACTION STEP: For just a moment imagine yourself the woman who poured her oil out on Jesus. How does it feel to touch Him with that deep, love and gratefulness? What prompts you to be grateful enough to pour out your praise? Think about how good Jesus has been to you. Now, think about what He has done for you. Really see all that Jesus has in store for your future--and even your today.
